BL4-U is a half-wave thyristor type automatic voltage regulator (AVR) with phase control, forming part of the excitation system of a generator. In addition to regulating the generator voltage, the BL4-U AVR circuit includes underspeed protection functions. The excitation power is derived directly from the generator terminals. Positive voltage build-up from residual levels is ensured by the use of “efficient” semiconductors in the AVR power circuit. The BL4-U is connected to the main stator windings and the exciter field windings to provide closed-loop control of the output voltage. In addition to being supplied by the main stator, the AVR also derives a sample voltage from the output windings for voltage control purposes. In response to this sample voltage, the BL4-U AVR controls the power fed into the exciter field and then the main field to maintain the machine output voltage within specified limits, compensating for generator load, speed, temperature and power factor. A frequency measurement circuit constantly monitors the generator output and provides protection from underspeed at the excitation system output by reducing the output voltage proportionally to the speed below a preset threshold. A manual adjustment is provided for the factory setting of the under frequency (UF) roll-off point. This can be easily changed to 50 or 60 Hz in the two-position jumper. Provision is made for connection of a remote voltage potentiometer, allowing the user precise control of the generator output.
